Creativity can be defined as:

The tendency to generate or recognise ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others.

Andrew Holland founder of Imagination Fuel

When I was a 7-year-old boy I hated school. I often took my work to the teacher to be marked and she said I had got it wrong and had to try again.

I went back and sat down and tried my best but still the answer to the question was what I had written. Then I watched my friend go up with the same answer and get it marked correctly. When I asked the teacher about this she simply said  she had 'made a mistake'. It was a mistake she made on a regular basis.

It wasn't long before I stopped putting in any effort and whilst the other children were busy writing I looked out to the fields and my imagination kicked in.  I saw elves battling orcs, space ships landing on the fields to fly me away and I saw dragons flying over the hills in the distance.

Although the teacher didn't know it, by their actions they had forced me to use my imagination to escape the boredom of her classroom. Looking back that was the year my imagination was fuelled for life.

I believe that imagination is as important as literacy because without imagination you would have no creativity.

Think about that for a second.

Without creativity, we would have no art, no technology, no smart phones, no Google, no planes and pretty much anything that required a spark of creativity.
